Diets, sales, cold weather and dark mornings – oh, January can be horrible. What you need is a sprinkle of Dulwich magic to cheer you up.
Well, abracadabra! Dulwich Picture Gallery is starting a new series of LATES (late night openings) on the third Thursday of each month. Third Thursdays will include both the gallery and exhibition staying open until 10pm, with themed films, music, drinks, art classes and other events, starting at 6.30pm.
The first late night (January 17) has a magical theme. Chosen to tie in with the current exhibition, The Age of Enchantment (see reviews), the evening will include magic, music and more.
Dulwich magician Barrie Westwell promises levitating ladies and some classic ‘parlour magic’ tricks. He’s also offered to talk about the history of magic and some of the techniques involved in creating illusions. Impress your friends at dinner parties with the amazing cup and ball routine!
Aquamanda (also known as local singer Amanda Greatorex) will be providing a suitably mystical ambience, with her celestial voice and dreamy songs.
There’ll be a bar and the café will be open for light suppers. And don’t forget the main attraction – the fantastic exhibition of illustrations itself, the perfect backdrop of fairies, goblins and Arabian nights.
Pencil in third Thursdays for the rest of the year – there’ll be a different theme each month. We’ll keep you posted on the site.
£5 entry on the door
