Day 35
but when she got there the cupboard was bare… We’ve thrown out just £4.50 worth of food so far this year. More of a feat than it sounds – this time last year it would have been around £30 by now - we reckoned up. I heard on the BBC that about 15p in every £1 spent on food is chucked out. So we’re planning ahead what we eat and working round what’s still coming out of the allotment or what leftovers are lurking in the fridge. Plainly this is working and we’re eating better, trying out new recipes purely because we have the conversation and actually write a shopping list. Unintended consequences include: 1. Have lost a bit of weight – still wondering about this one – must be eating more wholesomely. 2. Can no longer open the fridge door and smile benignly upon the constituents of a feast of Medicean proportions. Have had to make do with the consolations of a replete store cupboard.
Save £60 a year by using rechargeable batteries in my digital camera alone – ashamed it took me this long. Will report back on Uniross ones when they’ve had a thorough test drive.
Made £35 selling some clobber on eBay and Amazon marketplace -
Scoreboard: 1 carrier bag (oops, but it was a clothes shop), £355 saved so far (assuming we stick with the ’elegant economy’ eating) Some way to go if we’re to save £2k…
Catherine Fraher’s 2008 resolution was to turn darker Green and save £2000 in the process. Constructive criticism and debate most welcome. More
