A new art Gallery opened in East Dulwich and the first exhibition is on until the 1st of June. Angela Corrias went to meet the artists.

julie bennettIt was the second time I met painter Julie Bennett and her enthusiasm is always more contagious. Unfortunately I can hardly hold a pencil on my hand, otherwise I woul have loved to became an artist.

Julie is currently showing at the East Dulwich gallery “William Angel” in their opening exhibition, jointly with other four artists. The specialities in the dish are varied and everbody will undoubtedly find their favourite craft, from painting to photography to digital design.

The owner of the studio, witty and sarcastic John Adrian, is showing four photographs of his current project “In the Shadows of Power”, consisting of images taken in the palaces and temples across Asia and Europe.

Far from their ancient splendor, these sites are now mainly ruins allowing the visitors to travel back in the past with the only means of their imagination. After studying photography under American master photographer Thomas Joshua Cooper at Glasgow School of Art, John has immediately started making the metaphoric and playful movement between shadow and illumination as the main character of his works.

Julie, labelled as one of Saatchi’s new stars is showing some of her best works. Julie likes representing women, in the original way of making them directly participating in the interpretation of the image, not as passive purely decorative objects.

Under the influence of artists such as Micheal Andrews, Lucian Freud, Marlene Dumas, Jenny Saville, Julie is fascinated by people’s faces and identities and draws her inspiration from religious iconography, popular culture, graffiti, tattos.

Philip Maltman paintingsThe exhibition also shows oil on paper and oil on canvas paintings from the famous Dulwich local artist Philip Maltman, James Medcraft and the American Scott-Ray Johnstone. James Medcraft’s stylishly intertwines fine art and commercial design, making the boundaries between the two hazy.

Scott-Ray Johnstone, living in Camberwell, uses images from the mass media, newspapers and TV to manipulate them and create distortions. The celebrity exposed at William Angel is Anita Ekberg.

The exhibition is open from Friday to Saturday, every weekend until the 1st of June. Entry free. Address 1 Barry Parade, Peckham Rye, SE22 0JA. For more info www.williamangel.com
