‘MAKE IT LOCAL’ by second year design students
We have all produced works that respond to our personal explorations and impressions of the Mile Radius around Camberwell College.
They range from visual comments on the perceived cultural environment to pieces inspired by specific sites, references to history and tools to encourage the positive aspects of the area.
Inspiration is everywhere. The important thing is the boundary.’
Using wood from old estate agent signs, Desiree has framed her beautiful fabric pictures and suspended them from the ceiling so both sides can be viewed. The frames are exquisite.
‘The experience has been great. This is the first time I have exhibited my work. Talking to guests about our brief and our interpretation has been the good but their interest after I have spoken to them is even better.’ Desiree McLean
Eva made 13 golden cubes with sausage patterns on them reflecting the 13 decades of the existence of Kennedy’s company. The last was on Peckham Road. She has photos of this derelict building with the cubes attached to a blue pole outside it. This is also a celebration of all local small shops.
‘It is very interesting for me to see our 2 months work placed out of the studios of the college. I like the people interacting with the pieces. My work is historically connected to South London area and it is very nice to hear people’s personal memories about Kennedy’s sausages. This place is very informal and that allows visitors to feel relaxed and enjoy their time here.’ Eva
Abigail has crocheted some wonderful alternative hammocks and a swing in white washing line for summer days.
‘It has bee lovely showing my work in the Dulwich festival. It has been a chance for me to share my work and get some feedback. I have also been able to test my swing with many generations. My pieces resemble taught spiders’ webs and so there have been many fly impressions and general relaxing in the sunshine.’ Abigail Dace
Ross has created a 3 piece set – a gun, a knife and items associated with drug taking, out of ceramic, gold leaf, diamante and mirror. They explore the issues currently affecting Camberwell and Peckham by taking icons of hate and death and turning them into ones of beauty.
‘The Dulwich Festival is my first public showing of my work and I think there is a really good atmosphere. I don’t think my pieces were not quite right for the festival as they are controversial ceramic pieces and not based on found objects.’ Ross G.
‘As an artist, displaying my work in domestic surroundings has been interesting and a pleasant experience. It is common to see an artists’ work in a gallery but given the opportunity to use someone’s home gives my work a sense of belonging and much more meaning.’ Chau Nguyen
A polypropylene hexikit is all about connecting the community in a different and joyful way. The kit could be in public spaces and encourages interaction between people as they make balls, masks, anything, and then play together.
‘It has been a great experience meeting many people in different areas of work. I have got a lot more ideas and inspiration which I’m going to put into my project to take it further.’ Elizabeth Young
A series of brightly coloured, attractive public rubbish bins with cut out tops have been made by Myrto Voutyra. Of differing heights, they encourage street cleanliness.

Recycling all that water we waste while waiting for it go hot, Marcelo Barbosa has invented an environmental tool which is not only practical but very beautiful.
If the homeless build a shelter onto a phone box, they will have a postcode, so can receive benefit.
