With tails between legs, having left yesterday’s answer sheet only half-completed, Steve Slack and team head to Camberwell in search of pub quiz victory.
WEDNESDAY
The Sun and Doves is much more than just a public house. It’s a lively and friendly pub, yes, but it also boasts a tempting menu, fine cocktail list, a well-used gig space, changing displays of local artists’ work and a secluded family-friendly beer garden with sculptural installations and an outdoor barbeque in the summer. They even find time to screen free films every Tuesday in the main bar. Most months have a theme – for the latest, see here. (And if you’re interested in local film clubs , do also check out Gallery Film at Dulwich Picture Gallery.)
But on a Wednesday evening, they turn off the music, plug in the microphone and they quiz.
The quiz
We’re keen to put in a good performance this evening, so we arrive prompt for the 8pm start. At only £1 entrance per person and a whopping 75 questions, it’s remarkable value.
There’s always a good music round here and a round based on sheets of printed pictures. And one of my favourite rounds where the first letter of any answer is the last letter of the previous answer. Just to keep you on your toes.
The staff at the Sun and Doves are very trusting and, as such, allow teams to mark each other’s papers. While this could be viewed as promoting cheating and collaboration, it generally just encourages inter-team chatter and a bit of friendly rivalry.
By half time we are doing really quite well and we have our sights set firmly on first place.
It’s not a huge prize (£40 hard cash for the winners) but then it’s not been that difficult a quiz. It’s certainly been a fun quiz and there’s a genuinely pleasant atmosphere.
But in the end we just miss out and finish second. We’re getting better!
