You’d think that after three nights out quizzing we wouldn’t want to answer another question or listen to another music round. But were getting into our stride and can almost smell victory.
THURSDAY
So we head to The Plough, opposite Dulwich Library.
This used to be a horrid pub. I’ve previously ordered a pint, looked around, realised I shouldn’t be there, downed said pint and marched straight out again. So it was with a certain reluctance we ventured in on Thursday evening.
But someone has put a great deal of thought – and money – into this place. Never have I seen such a transformation in a pub. It’s just beautiful inside now. Stripped floors, dark walls, quirky pieces of furniture, lovely light conservatory, wasabi peas. Perfect.
The quiz
Their quiz is also a great attraction as well. We enter a team of five (at £1.50 a head). The now ubiquitous picture round was dealt with swiftly and a quirky and entertaining page of multiple choice questions, themed on the gameshow Who wants to be a millionaire? Give correct answers all the way to the million-pound question and win a round of drinks for your team! Miraculously, we got the million pound question correct (the definition of gallimaufry) but alas, previously had not known the Latin name for a pistachio (anacardiaceae). Strange, as we were munching them at the time.
By half time we were just in the lead. After a somewhat premature celebration and another round of drinks we didn’t score that well in the second half and ended up coming third overall. Boo. But not a bad for a first attempt at this venue. Will we ever achieve our goal of finishing in first place in a pub quiz?
My top tip for this particular quiz is to think long and hard about your team name.
The winners (who receive the pot of money) also get their name and score chalked up on the wall of the pub. Each week’s winner gets slotted into place (rather like celebrity lap times on Top Gear ). So, if you do really well you’ll be up on the wall for a while. Clever, eh?
We’ll be going back to get our name on the board, I’m sure.
