The paintings may be of dead people, but they are far from boring. In fact, some of the people in those paintings are very badly behaved. Just the other day I happened to notice for the first time a Dutch painting of a pub in which a drunk man was urinating against a pillar in the middle of the pub! In another painting a mother was squirting breast milk into her baby's mouth. This sort of thing would not be tolerated in Dulwich in 2008, but you can see it in the Picture Gallery in glorious 17th Century technicolour. And in another painting a young Dutch boy had some dreadful disease and had lost huge patches of his hair, poor lad. So, nothing boring about that! Social realism and human misery. Followed by a coffee in the cafe, of course. I do love their deserts.

It's nice just to spend some time relaxing in the tranquil gardens, watching the 'posh' people arrive.

this article made me laugh (in a good way)- just getting in there and tackling those awkward misconceptions (like posh people and paintings of dead people !)
i was never one for an old master, but being able to come up so close to a painting in a small, unintimidating gallery and really scrutinise technique of a range of different artists has been a real eye opener.

Then have a cappucino in the lovely grounds. Aaah, DPG- our local treasure.

When I bang on about the wonderful Gallery, people say - 'well why didnt you tell me also there was tons of free parking all around the place and a park opposite to walk my dog? Tate Modern doesn't have those essentials'.
