After a positive response to the article about Vincent van Gogh and his time in London in the 1870s, Dulwich Picture Gallery has kindly provided an image of van Gogh’s signature from the Gallery’s visitor book.
Ian Dejardin, Director of the Gallery, told us that it was hard to find him in the archive. Although we know him as Vincent, he signed himself as V W van Gogh, so as not to get confused with his uncle with whom he shared a name. Also, he has appalling handwriting. Can you make it out in this image?
Photo: huge thanks to DPG.

No, I can’t! Where is it?
From this week’s editor:
Its the dark writing which is in focus. There is a dark ‘horizontal’ line on the left of the picture, then Hvvangogh all joined. There is a small 2 after his name. Presumably he brought a guest.
The signature underneath seems to be PG Standi??g.
No wonder it was difficult to find!
The guest is confirmed by Vincent’s letter to friends 3 days later – he came to the Gallery ‘with one of the Germans’ (there were two Germans staying at his lodgings). He mentions elsewhere that he will have to stop going places with them, because they are big spenders, and he can’t afford it.
Entrance to Dulwich Picture Gallery is very reasonable today.
I wonder if it was expensive to get in during the 1870s?
