Growing Chillies in Brockwell Park

At the top of the hill in Brockwell Park lies a small corner of calm and quiet.

Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses is an independently run charity project offering a relaxed and tranquil environment where the local community can enjoy gardening. Volunteers come together there to learn about plants, wildlife and the environment.

Their garden is open to the public every Sunday afternoon. But last week when I went by they were in the middle of a festival of Latin American chillies!

There were talks about chillies, people on hand to recommend tips about growing chillies, demonstrations and displays, food to taste and plants for sale.

It’s all part of a summer-long project run by the Greenhouses based around the food of Latin America. Already this summer they’ve been growing – and eating – blue corn, quinoa, tomatillos, Brazilian beans, thirty different kinds of chilli, twenty kinds of pumpkins and squashes and something amazing called exploding achocha.

They’ve also featured wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Islands, Peru and Mexico.

Mmmm, tasty chillies

Coming up in the near future are two more days in the series:
Sun 26 October – Pumpkin Day
Sun 30 November – Potato Day

See their website for more details.

All right on our doorstep in the middle of Brockwell Park. Who’d’ve thought it?
