Another Blue Plaque for Dulwich

Following on in our series of articles about blue plaques in the local area, Ian McInnes reports on the latest installation in Dulwich.

Monday 6th October: a new blue plaque was unveilled to remember Anne Shelton, one of the best known British singing stars of the 40s and 50s. She lived at 142 Court Lane for 50 years from 1944.

Anne received over 1000 votes in the 2008 London blue plaque ballot.
The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Southwark and was followed by music from 1940’s style duo, The Swingtime Sweethearts dressed in period outfits.
In her early career Anne sang with Ambrose, Glenn Miller and Bing Crosby. Her famous songs include ‘Lili Marlene’ and ‘Lay Down Your Arms’ – the latter reached number one in the UK charts in September 1956 and stayed there for four weeks.

She maintained her career during the 1960s and 70s and in 1980 joined the Committee of the Not Forgotten Association – the organisation for all ex-Servicemen from the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, the Falklands Campaign and Northern Ireland. Anne organised and appeared in two shows a year, all held at Buckingham Palace.

Look out for more blue plaques in the area and let us know when you spot one.
