Leonie Cronin tells more about the Art Fair organised by James Allen’s Girls’ School to raise money for their new Community Music Centre.

This year I have been involved with the setting up of the South London Women Artists (SLWA), a wonderful website to bring together women artists working and living in the area. SLWA is the brainchild of Jenny Sweeny who runs the InSight lecture series at Dulwich Picture Gallery (more about the current series on jewellery). Jenny ran a series of lectures on women artists in June, and came up with idea at the beginning of the year. Within 8 months we had created the site that brought together 80 artists showing some of the amazing talent in our community.

I find working as an artist in my own studio quite an isolating experience. Sometimes this is something I enjoy! However I welcomed the opportunity to meet other artists and interact with my community. Through helping to set up SLWA I have come across many talented people, who also give their time freely in order to enrich the community around them. You will find some members of the SLWA group taking part in the JAGS Art Fair.

London is such an international cultural centre, that I think you forget to look in your own back garden for treasure, luckily Dulwich and the surrounding areas have lots of big gardens and open spaces! The Art Fair will provide a chance to meet those artists who work away on their own, and produce those treasures.

The Art Fair also provides an opportunity for pupils at JAGS to be able to meet artists and see how they work. The art department at JAGS is remarkable. I am always impressed by the standard of work around the school. Their pupils’ ability is underscored by results and they regularly get distinctions in exams as the best in the country! I spoke to Sam Payne (Head of Art) about the fair:

We are all looking forward to the Art Fair on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November. This promises to be a very exciting event and one where there will be an opportunity to see and purchase the works of a diverse range of artists. It’s excellent that the fund raising will be put to such a good cause – the James Allen’s Community Music Centre Fund, providing not only for the pupils at JAGS, but also the wider community where such a facility is greatly needed..
