Its great to know the people behind the job titles.
The current exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, What Are You Like?’ asks celebrities to illustrate some of their likes and a pet aversion – the results are hanging at the end of the Gallery (and some images of them are on the side bar). Dulwich OnView asked some of the Gallery staff to reveal themselves in text.

Idling away at my computer I thought about my pet loves and pet likes and pet aversions, and here they are…
1. favourite animal When I was a child I had a pet monkey (we lived in Malaya), and then a pet mongoose when we lived in Africa, and later, when we retured to England a pet owl (who shat all over the dining room where he lived – it meant we only ever used the kitchen to eat in)
2. book I am a real bore about this; my favourite book is called Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It’s American, about a team of cowboys who drive a heard of cows from Texas to Montana, but it’s much more exciting than I’ve made it sound.
3. clothes I adore clothes and spent the first three days that Westfield was open (near Shepherds Bush if anyone is interested) going round the shops. Pure heaven. Too many favourite clothes to mention just one. Clothes clothes clothes, I love ‘em.
4. comfort hunkering down on the sofa in front of my great big television watching Damages, Desperate Housewives, Spooks, Mad Men
5. food poached eggs on toast. Chocolates…
6. pastime cinema; every Friday night with a group of friends. We call ourselves The Cinema Club. Oh! And art, I forgot art, particularly early art and 17th c. Dutch art.
7. place Well this week it was Westfield, but really Notting Hill Gate and Italy
8. possession What, apart from clothes? Can one say one’s husband?
9. music opera; anything by Mozart, Verdi and Belini, Wagner. And the Rolling Stones.
10. shoes This varies from season to season but shoes are high on my list of things I love. (These shoes are made for walking and that’s just what they’ll do. One of these days these shoes will walk all over you)
11. weather Sunshine and warmth
12. pet aversion (the thing you most love to hate!) DOGS. I HATE DOGS. I DON’T EVEN LOVE TO HATE THEM.
Next week see what Ian Dejardin, the director is like …. Here is a preview:
Favorite animal – Dogs, dogs, dogs – much nicer than people

This is such a fascinating series of personality snapshots – I would never have thought that Kate would love a cowboy novel like Lonesome Dove! I enjoyed the TV series with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall but never read the book – quite a different world to Baroque masterpieces and high culture…
People, it’s a wicked lie. She loves dogs; she does.
A lovely bouncy happy well dressed and shod woman…… well done x
I dont love dogs! I hate them. It’s my sister Boo who put that remark- she loves dogs (she has two) and so has my other sister…. dog lovers just can’t imagine people not liking dogs. maybe I’ll be a dog in my next life. hope not, they are so fawning and creepy and want to please all the time. or they bite you.
