Sam Payne, Head of Art, describes the build up to the exhibition.  And she has joined the many writers for Dulwich OnView and the celebrities in the recent Gallery exhibition, ‘What Are You Like?’ in describing herself in terms of  her likes and dislikes.

Less than 3 weeks to go! We are all extremely excited about this exhibition; the culmination of a year’s work where pupils have been considering the nature of drawing. Dialogues, our first exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery explored the complexity of learning taking place on many levels and our first exhibition showed how inspiration can lead to transformation. Very close study can lead to a deeper understanding. Drawn Together takes this a step further and explores the nature of drawing and ideas.

The Art Department has been a hive of activity with work being made in a variety of media and pupils have again excelled and exceeded expectations, producing work of the highest quality. Specialist interest in textiles and drawing (Sam Payne), painting and drawing (Irene Riddell), drawing, painting and print-making (Andrew Carter), sculpture and drawing (Kate Firth), painting and drawing (Chantal Gillingham), together with Christine Berrill’s expertise in Art History, gives a rich source of inspiration to the pupils. Huge credit to our technician, John Luttick, too, who has single-handedly made all of the frames for the exhibition – no small feat!

As the days get closer to the opening of the exhibition we are making mock hanging of the space in the Linbury Room and putting the finishing touches to what we hope, will be a very successful exhibition. It is particularly exciting that this coincides with the Saul Steinberg exhibition which has already been highly acclaimed by press and visitors alike and we feel privileged to be part of such company.

Closed Sundays and Mondays, also 20 February

There’s so much going on at DPG! As an affectionate tribute to the great What Are You Like? exhibition, here are Head of Art, Sam Payne’s answers to the same, weighty questions, as an antidote to her all-consuming thoughts about the exhibition as the preparation gathers momentum:
