Spiritual, illogical, hybrid, ambiguous, ephemeral, changeable, formal and conceptual.
Beata Kozlowska talks about Micro-Macro Vision, the new exhibition by Elaine Mullings, Tomasz Stando, Jean Elliot and herself at the Red Gate Gallery in Brixton.
“The gallery is situated in a trendy area of local pubs, cinemas and clubs. The exhibition is held in the cool Red Gate Gallery bar, where you can enjoy delightful cocktails and a great array of bottled beers.
The show is an amazing opportunity to see an exciting combination of works: painting, photography, prints, sculpture and installation accompanied by wine and canapés in an inspiring atmosphere of a contemporary Gallery setting.
Micro-Macro Vision in the Red Gate Gallery captures the viewer with playfulness, irony and contrasts. It might sound a little bit bizarre, but the Micro has a lot to do with the way we perceive our world, and also cunningly aspires to a much more privileged, ‘global’ vision.
The show featuring works of Tomasz Stando, Ellaine Mullings, Jean Elliot and myself is an exciting mixture of different points of view.
For each of us the contradiction between the Micro-Macro expresses itself in different approaches to material, form and the source of inspiration, ranging from body parts and mundane materials to a more spiritual and illogical way of building our own ‘language’.
Installation is an incredibly open medium for experimentation and involving the viewer’s senses. It has hybridism and ambiguity; Micro-Macro is contrast and harmony at the same time.
On entering the gallery space you will see large ‘Piled up’-Heart of Darkness (Elaine Mullings) harmonizing with the small RED installation called ‘Scarlet’ placed on the pale floor and ‘Mimicry’- a table installation by me, Beata Kozlowska. On the walls are my photographs, a reflection of the actual reality of ‘small objects’
In my work, I use ephemeral, temporal material in order to create provisional, changeable installations and fabricated ready-made objects. I experiment with these, one of the most exciting things I do. I escaped from 2D (obsessive drawing on paper and wall)… I started working with different materials (including: thread, wool, plastic wire, nets), making ready-mades (based on domestic objects) associated with the ‘feminine’. The installation involves a wide range of media: sculpture, ready-made objects, cutout forms scattered and suspended, appealing to all the senses.
You are also drawn by the intensity of Stando’s painting and Elliot’s delicacy of drawing based on the human body. Contrast, colour and form are central points of the whole visual experience.”
