Online social networking can connect you with people all over the world. Or from just round the corner.

I recently reviewed my facebook profile and decided to cull a few of the groups I’m in. Do I still need to be in the group Every time your misplace an apostrophe, God kills another kitten? And why did I join Museum in Ukraine? It must have been on a whim, surely.
But I’m also a member of a few Facebook groups linked to the local Dulwich area. It got me thinking about what else might be out there. There’s some strange stuff in the world of the Internet, and some of it is closer to home than you think.
Here’s a quick selection of some of the groups you can join:
Dulwich Books
A group for fans of the independent bookshop in West Dulwich
Dulwich Scouts
A reunion site for all those involved with scouting in Dulwich since 1929
Ultimate Frisbee in southeast London
They say: ‘We want to start an ultimate frisbee team in south-east London to play regularly at the weekends in Dulwich park. The more the merrier!’
Dulwich Players
Local drama group who put on shows in the village
Dulwich Runners
These must be the people I see zooming about Dulwich at twilight of an evening with panting, earnest faces
Dulwich Winos
They say: ‘Open to those who like a tipple and hail from Dulwich or like to drink in Dulwich or are members of the Dulwich Wine Society.’
East Dulwich Drinking Society
Less high-brow than the winos, these people just like going to the pub.
Dulwich Gingers
This appears to be a group for people who are ginger and live in the local area. The mind boggles!
Balfe’s Bikes
This East Dulwich bike shop is looking to take over the defunct public conveniences on Peckham Rye, with the aim of teaching local people how to care for their bikes. They need to prove to Southwark Council that cyclists in the area want something like this though, so if you’re a keen biker in south London, do join their group and lend them your support.
Dulwich Picture Gallery
The official facebook group run by the Gallery. Useful for keeping up to date on upcoming events and Gallery news and makes your list of groups look incredibly cultured.
GalleryFilm
The film club, run by the Friends of DPG, which screens movies on the third Monday of each month at the Gallery. Join the group for monthly updates.
East Dulwich SNUB (Say No to Unwanted Bags)
The online counterpart of the campaign to rid us of plastic and tempt us toward hessian.
People who live in West Dulwich are so lovely
I love this one. A rather self-congratulatory group of people who describe themselves as ‘lovely, pretty and friendly’.
and my personal favourite…
Hanging on by our fingernails in East Dulwich…
They call themselves ‘A support group for anyone who fears SE22 might be too posh for them’.
So there you go. There’s much more as well. Take a look on facebook and join a new group.
You might make some new friends. But you’ll probably remove yourself from the group in six months time anyway.

Ooooo thanks Steve – some good groups to look at there, so brillant to know Facebook is local too. I know what you mean about the groups too though – so funny at the time, not so funny when you look back over them!
