4th Plinth Pedal Power

By Court Lane Resident Neil Ellis

“I was lucky enough to have a successful application for Antony Gormley’s ‘One & Other’ project on the 4th Plinth at Trafalgar Square.neil ellis ONE AND OTHER ELEVATION for web

It took me a while to decide what to do with my peak slot of 1pm on Sat 18 July (this Saturday). I am keen cyclist and I have been shocked by the number of deaths of cyclists within London, a staggering 22 since January 2008.  So I have chosen to use my hour to bring to peoples attentions the tragic number to deaths.

I will be erecting 22 white 2m banners, each one representing one death. To add to the spectacle I will be wearing a skeleton costume and cycling a white bike in the style of the ghost bike organisation.

It would be great to get some local support so why not come along, on your bike of course, to watch the event. I also have a facebook site called ‘4th Plinth Pedal Power’ to encourage debate and discussion on this matter with the view of formulating a petition to Boris and TFL for improved road safety for cyclists.

Here is the link to the facebook group.”

Dear Neil, more power to your pedals for coming up with this striking idea to commemorate the deaths of London’s cyclists. We need proper cycle lanes in London, and if we had them many more people would take to their bikes. When that day comes we can celebrate, but in the meantime, your hour on the plinth is a very necessary memorial to those who have died. Hope it goes well.

  2. Terrific visuals, Neil! A powerful way to make a much needed statement about how cyclists are at risk in London.

Neil, please contact me for details of how I believe cycliing safety can be much improved. This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s an idea that I believe can make a dramatic difference. Send me an email and I’ll give you a telephone number. Or you can give me yours. I have much experience in road safety. Hope to hear from you.
