2012 Olympic Games
27 July-12 Aug 2012
Which London landmarks will feature on a special set of London 2012 pins?
Southwark residents have been invited to choose which landmark their borough should be represented by in a set of souvenir pin badges to be produced for the London 2012 Olympics.
A set of 33 badges is to be produced – one for each of London’s local authorities – and a public vote is under way to choose the images to represent each borough.
The Southwark shortlist:
Dulwich Picture Gallery
The first public art gallery in England, founded in 1811, is a masterpiece by famous Regency architect Sir John Soane. Now famous for its exhibitions and award-winning education department, Dulwich Picture Gallery will have an exhibition of Andy Warhol during the 2012 Games.
Elephant
The nearby shopping centre was built in the early 1960s on a site that was heavily bombed in WW2. It was the first of its kind in Europe and now welcomes a diverse cultural mix of traders. The Elephant and Castle statue was rescued from an old public house that was demolished on the site.
Globe Theatre
The building is a faithful reconstruction of Shakespeare’s playhouse. Performances and an education programme combine to create an international resource dedicated to the exploration of the work of Shakespeare’s and his time.
Peckham Library
Designed by Will Alsop, the library won the Stirling Prize for the best new building in Britain in 2000. This striking building clad in copper features ‘pods’ used for meetings and community events. It welcomes over 400,000 visitors a year and is the busiest of Southwark’s lending libraries.
