Should you contact Mr O’Brien, do it the traditional way; “I haven’t got an email, I’ve only just got past the wind up telephone!” Mr O’Brien says. Nevertheless, the Golden Lion is spot on with new trends: the pub has already played host to Sydenham Arts Festival, including an event with the local singer Alex Carter. He has now booked Alex with Vintage Jazz Duo for the 17th October.

The Golden Lion already hosts regular jazz and blues nights; the event is free, and the turnout is always good.

Mr O’Brien says “ lately people are much more interested in jazz, it’s good for business, and locals don’t want to drive too far.” Whether that is due to congestion charges, or people avoiding driving at all on a night out, it’s certainly good for the environment. The four types of real ale available at the delightful old style pub are definitely part of the attraction.

After all, both the new Sydenham Community Radio and Sydenham Arts Festival launched this year, “I should think so!” replies Joe O’Brien; and he should know, he’s been here in Sydenham for thirty years. The event could become a regular feature for the pub alongside the other music nights.

With all this clear passion for live music, don’t expect him to stand up and join in though; “I haven’t got a note in my head!” he says
