Where’s the best pub quiz in the local area?
The Bear in Camberwell?
The Crystal Palace Tavern in East Dulwich?
The Herne on Peckham Rye?
You might not think it, but there’s also a quiz at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Teams from local pub quizzes are invited to take part in this year’s quiz in the grand surroundings of the Gallery. It won’t just be the kind of questions you’d expect from DPG , like art and architecture. Other rounds include travel, sport, food & drink and politics.
Like a pub quiz, there’s a great atmosphere. There’s a break half way through for a quick dinner, which is included in the ticket price. And there’s a bar, but each team of six people also gets a free bottle of wine at the start! There’s also a fair bit of banter between teams – but watch out they don’t steal your answers.
Unlike a regular pub quiz, there’s a huge screen at one end of the Gallery with all the team names listed. As each round progresses the scores are entered and the leader board is updated, so you can see how well – or badly – you’re doing.
John Benger is a regular at the Gallery Quiz and has been on the winning team for the last three years. But now he’s turned his back on the team and is one of this year’s question setters. He told Dulwich OnView: “There is something particularly appealing about being in the gallery outside normal hours – it has a very private feel to it. And the quiz is a very social occasion not taken too seriously by its participants.”
The details:
Saturday 7 November, 7.30pm at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

ps – I’d probably say The Herne is still the best pub quiz in the area. Try it out on Sunday evenings, 7.30. Or see their facebook group.
