Dulwich Picture Gallery in BFI Film Festival

Dulwich Picture Gallery featured in a massive 8 hour event at the British Film Institute on Saturday thanks to 3 teenagers from Dulwich.

‘Visionaries: Youth in High Definition’ was aimed at young people aged 16-25 years. Three girls from the JAGS Liberal Studies programme run by Dulwich Picture Gallery had made a short film (in 2 hours!) highlighting the importance of connecting the community with art, and particularly that of their local Gallery.

It was chosen, among others to be screened in the section Film Makers of the Future and shown to other young people, policy makers and people in the industry.

The day included workshops on casting, camera skills, public speaking, design, creative writing, journalism, spoken work and speed networking with producers and directors from film and TV.

There was a Young Person’s Question Time dealing with issues facing young people in society today with Michael Mansfield QC (who defended the Guilford 4 and Birmingham 6 and has represented Brian Keenan and the Stephen Lawrence and Jean Charles de Menezes families). Also, Kerry McCarthy MP, Tim Loughton MP and Matt Sellwood (young Green) as panel members.

Not content with participating in organised events, Emily and Anita took the opportunity to take footage for another film by interviewing people attending the event and filming them with a tiny MinoHD flipcam.   They will then make a second film using the editing skills they have gained on the Dulwich Picture Gallery Liberal Studies course.  The finished product can be seen on the blog I ♥ ART, a website that the group is creating aimed at interesting young people in the arts and Dulwich Picture Gallery in particular.

It will also be seen on Dulwich OnView.

All the films we managed to see were fantastic and the time and effort that had gone into each one was very impressive. It was nice to hear that people were planning on visiting Dulwich Picture Gallery after seeing the film. Also there were many different things going on to keep us occupied at the BFI – the graffiti board was particularly entertaining!

Yes, The Digital Graffiti Wall (www.yrwall.com) was hugely popular.
In case others havent seen it before YrWall is an interactive drawing art tool where users create virtual digital graffiti on a large wall using a modified spray paint can. It is graffiti with a can that contains no paint, only a button and IR light source which is tracked using a computer vision system!

How about having one at Dulwich Picture Gallery?
