Cross Platform Artist – Ruth Dupre

Ruth Dupre

I admit to finding this new description a bit of a mouthful – but on reflection it really does sound a lot better than ‘dilettante’ which is what Ruth Dupre sometimes thought she might be labelled.

Ruth Dupre gave a fascinating talk at The Arts Club, Dover Street, London W1 about her work across several disciplines and media – from ceramics to painting, from painting to glass and recently her move from glass into film.

Ruth described how her fascination with ‘the frozen moment’ is a constant theme, how she involves her family and friends in the creative process but also how she seeks to maintain creative control in any media. She also admits to having ‘a loose, maverick attitude’ and an idiosyncratic approach – so whatever rules there are – are self imposed.

In her latest short film ‘Two Men Hanging’ Ruth invited a trapeze artist and a contemporary dancer to participate in an extended day’s filming in a circus space in Greenwich.

Never having met before, Ruth filmed them like ‘two moving sculptures” to make a 4 minute non-linear, non-narrative film.

Two Men Hanging is an intimate short about light, colour, movement and sound – where Ruth and the camera are the third ‘actor’ and the soundtrack is of equal value to the images.

Next up, Ruth is planning on exploring sound scapes in her film work – by starting out with a friend who is a cellist and including both ambient and electronic recordings into the final soundtrack.

Ruth’s film is currently on the film festival circuit and it is difficult for film makers to show their work prior to submission to film festivals, but if it is scheduled for any screenings here in London we will sign post this on the blog.

Meanwhile Monday Talk is a series of art lectures at The Arts Club and the next one is with David Hornung on Monday 15th March 2010 and non-members can book a seat – contact Anna 020 7408 5092 or email anna@theartsclub.co.uk.
