Hi Kimberley.

Thanks for your comments. Did you try to contact a specialist? Is the container marked on the base with “Scenes from Coaching Days & Coaching Ways by Special Permission of Macmillan & Co. Ltd. Ridgway England”? If parts are missing, it may be a little difficult. If you email us an image of the picture, I can forward the image to the author of the article. editor@dulwichonview.org.uk

How interesting. I came across this post as I was Googling for information on Stephen Green.

Today I dug up (in the Cotswolds) the barrel of a pottery gun with his mark on it. Sadly it was just the barrel but the detail on it is quite fascinating.

I thought it was probably quite old but had not anticipated that it was over 150 years old!

I use local clays in my sculptures and it is a lovely terracotta, however I'm not sure you will have many takers to buy it as the whole area is built on this clay, it is not exactly a rare commodity! Also it takes quite a bit of work to dig it up, let alone make it safe to use in a kiln without blowing up. I run classes in using local clays if anyone is interested?

I was very interested in your Royal Doulton Lambeth article. I remember as a child living in Vauxhall close to Doultons in Black Prince Road, and in the mid-1930 period prior to the war I watched barges full of clay being unloaded in their dock across the road, so they apparently did not use the local garden type.
I currently own a pair of large Doulton vases that have been handed down in my family since about 1921-1923 when they were made in the Lambeth art pottery.

They have survived twice being in bomb damaged houses during the blitz on London without a scratch!!

When I inherited them and very carefully brought them here to Canada I found out that one of the vase artists was senior assistant artist Minnie Webb.

I now have two sons and a grandson that will hopefully continue the family care of these two magnificent works of art.

How amazing, the pottery was a major employer of local women, up to three hundred and fifty in its heyday. It's interesting to hear how important that employment was to people. It must have caused a massive upheaval when the factory closed, I expect some people had to move up north to follow the work.

Not sure you really want to hear about my bright ideas, some are truly awful! But I will be posting more about local crafts and industries - like charcoal makers from croydon!

History is great when you discover it like this-all from digging a hole in the garden!

My grandfather's two eldest sisters worked for Doulton Lambeth Art Pottery from about 1895 onwards and this work enabled them to keep the family together when both parents died.

Then of course the Art Pottery moved to the potteries area in Burslem but by then the children were all old enough to earn their own livings.

Tell us some more of your good ideas, or not so good as the case may be.
