The Hepworth: presence through absence

Divided Circle by Barbara Hepworth

The theft of the Hepworth sculpture ‘Two Forms’ has united diverse groups of people who would not otherwise have had cause to work together.

Dulwich Park Friends (DPF) is planning an exhibition about the sculpture to take place during the Dulwich Park Festival Fair 2012 in a marquee near the site from which the piece was stolen. A number of artists are already involved, with many ideas put forward.

If you have any photographs of the sculpture, ideas for the exhibition (such as work inspired by the Hepworth), or technical expertise (sound recording, website creation, electronic displays etc), please contact Dulwich Park Friends below.

We are also meeting Southwark soon to discuss public art in the park, the use of the insurance proceeds and ideas for the Hepworth site. We’ll keep you informed.

In other news…

The strange machine you see in the park (see pic) that looks like a cross between Noo‐Noo from the Teletubbies and an outsized Dyson vacuum cleaner has a name: FIDO.

But Fido is no poodle, because it stands for Faeces Intake & Disposal Operation – in other words, it’s a pooper scooper. Fido’s driver is Lee, who has driven the beast around Peckham Rye and Dulwich Parks for some six years (not continuously).

Lee’s verdict is that the problem of dog mess is no worse than it was ‐ but it’s no better either. Expect a push from Southwark soon, issuing fixed penalty notices to those who fail to clear up after their own four‐legged Fidos!

So what do you think about FIDO? Let us know…
