It’s always exciting to hear about a new property aquired by the National Trust, especially one that is really close to where I live.
In 2010 the National Trust accepted 575 Wandsworth Road, bequeathed from Khadambi Asalache. Asalache (1935-2006) was a Kenyan poet and author who lived in London.
He lived in the modest Georgian town-house in Wandsworth. The house was in very bad condition when he purchased it, as it had been lived in by squatters. He spent many years re-decorating the house, making Moorish influenced fretwork from discarded pieces of wood. The house featured many illustrations of African wilderness and his collection of English pottery.
The house is currently under-going extensive restoration work by the National Trust and will be opening early next year, so definitely one to look out for.
