Calling young designers – Take the Brixton Pound Fashion Challenge

The Brixton Pound – the local currency which features the likes of David Bowie and has attracted guest designs from Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller – is inviting young designers to develop fashion items based on the award-winning note designs, the best of which will go into production to be retailed across London.

BDT-webThis challenge will culminate in a show during the London Design Festival, where we will display items that have been submitted, having been judged by industry experts.

But… it’s a local currency?
That’s right, but the Brixton Pound is also a not-for-profit organisation which aims to promote a more social economy in Brixton, carrying out several projects including the Brixton Fund, which awards grants to support community activities in the area. Profits from retail help to increase the number of grants that are given out.

What are the brand values?
The Brixton Pound is rebellious in nature, but with a purpose. Formed after the financial crisis in 2008, the currency gives people the agency to stick a finger up to the banks on one hand, and support their locality with the other. It is rooted in Brixton; an area with a long history of protest, countercultural thought – and creativity. Anyone can use the Brixton Pound, and imagine a better world while doing so.

What kind of items are we looking for?
This is fashion brief which focuses on streetwear, so we’re looking for items such as t-shirts, bags, hats, hoodies, leggings – anything that can be easily made, and fit within a reasonable price bracket.

What’s in it for you?
All the usual. Exposure, fame, fun. But we’re not rip-off merchants. If your designs are made, we’ll pay you fairly – and involve you in the production process too.

What are the rules?
There are no rules. Apart from not using the portraits featured on the notes. Feel free to ignore, remix, screw-up and reinvent the assets. Do use them of course. But abuse them too.
