Southwark is a borough with much to celebrate and be proud of, and Southwark Youth Orchestra (SYO) is a unique opportunity for young musicians to come together to form a real community orchestra with one of the most talented young conductors in the country – Join and have fun!
Southwark Youth Orchestra is an aspirational orchestra, open to all young people either living or going to school in Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham or Greenwich. SYO has a Grade 5 (or equivalent standard) entry level, so it’s targeted at the most talented and committed young musicians.
The next SYO course is scheduled for February half term. During the two day course young people will be rehearsing a combination of classical and contemporary repertoire in preparation for the orchestra’s performance at the St Giles Church on 17 February.
SYO is conducted by the extraordinarily talented young and upcoming conductor, Ben Gernon. Ben is the Conducting Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is mentored by Sian Edwards, Charles Peebles, Martyn Brabbins and the now sadly late Sir Colin Davis. Ben made his BBC Proms debut conducting Tansy Davies’ Composer’s Portrait Concert for BBC Radio 3, and was a finalist in the Donatella Flick LSO conducting competition last year – an absolutely tremendous achievement. Ben is currently one of three finalists in the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.
There is a nominal course fee of £25 per player to attend each course, with concessions for siblings and for players in receipt of free school meals.
