ABOUT THIS MAGAZINE
Dulwich OnView magazine celebrates the people and culture of Dulwich and the surrounding areas of South London – and Dulwich Picture Gallery, of course!
The magazine came about when a group of us, who love Dulwich Picture Gallery and its area, and already write, blog, take photographs and so on, met up through the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery and decided to collaborate.
From East to West Dulwich and beyond we wanted to recognise the eclectic nature of life round here, the breadth of people and livelihoods, the rude health of the Arts, and the buoyant sense of community, and subvert the tired old caricatures lazily ascribed to our South London home.
All our team members and contributors are volunteers and Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery. If you would like to volunteer or contribute, as a writer, photographer, filmmaker, illustrator, or interviewer then please go to our Volunteer page.
Please let us how we’re doing, by commenting on articles or emailing us at dulwichonview@googlemail.com. To find out more about how this magazine came about you can listen to Yang-May Ooi’s phone blog.
The Friends of the Dulwich Picture Gallery is a vibrant and friendly community with events and activities supporting the art and work of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

I commission articles rather than write them and am mainly in charge of the Gallery related articles.

Greville Havenhand – Writer. Greville Havenhand came from a teetotal family but was introduced to good (and bad) wine by Oxford dons in the 1950s. Travelling the world as a BBC documentary maker and editor he grew to appreciate the versatility of wine and wine makers. On taking early retirement he acquired his Wine and Spirit Education Trust qualifications. For the last ten years Greville has led wine tours to France, he regularly gives tutored wine tastings and lectures to wine societies and is a contributing editor to wineontheweb.co.uk. He is an active member of the Dulwich Wine Society.
Aquamanda, aka Amanda Greatorex – Writer. Amanda is a local musician, DJ and Dulwich mum, often found leading a class of young school children round the gallery by day, djing and singing her own ambient songs next to the Gainsborough’s at night (monthly Lates). Dj-ing includes memorable parties at the BBC from Bruce Forsythe’s 80th and Sports Relief, Design launches in the West End, to local birthday parties and weddings. She is also a Dulwich festival regular performer (Goose Green fair) and the Big Chill festival.
Nicki Pickering I’ve just started a PhD at the University of London studying collecting, collections, the country house and museum history in 19th century Britain. It is a pleasure to say I began my career in the Heritage Sector at Dulwich Picture Gallery as a Gallery Attendant. I now also have an MA in curating from the Courtauld Institute and have been an assistant curator for the Royal Collection, National Portrait Gallery, The Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. I qualified as an aerobics instructor earlier in 2009 and am teaching group exercise classes when I can.
Steve Overbury Now a writer, Steve has also been a record company staffer, a recording engineer, a band manager, a graphic designer, a pig farmer, a fishmonger and Joan Collins’ chauffeur. His first book, Guns, Cash and Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Managers was published in 2007, and London Babylon: The Beatles and the Stones in the Swinging Sixties was published in November 2009.
Laverne Hunt – I am a film maker and founder of charity www.mcnltd.org. I love film. I have been making films with young people for the last couple of years. I enjoy the challenge of using comedy and documentary and finding quirky ways of reaching new audiences whether it be a screening at the BFI, a gallery or the House of Commons I like people to go home having had a engaging time.
Daniel Pateman -I enjoy creative writing, movies of all sorts, and listening to music (especially David Bowie). My vices are red wine, my love of all kinds of food, and my lack of will power. I am currently studying for a degree in Humanities and Media at Birkbeck, and working full time in any job that will pay the bills!
Erica Green – From Hong Kong to New Cross, London – what a culture shock! I grew up in the Far East and came over to do a degree at the Laban Centre. From my first career as a contemporary dancer/choreographer, I’ve gone on to establish my own lifestyle consultancy and I find myself here, in Dulwich, fifteen years on. Communication takes many forms and I’m really enjoying the DOV opportunity of sharing some of my thoughts and ideas with you all.
Lorenzo Ali – I’m a Dulwich based photographer and still fairly new to South London having arrived here via Moscow and Johannesburg (one was too hot , the other too cold). I was originally inspired as a child by my mother who landed from Switzerland with her German Dacora camera (which I still have). After 20 ’sharp suited’ years in advertising I’ve finally donned my worn-out jeans and turned a passion into a career as a freelance photographer. As a father of three young boys I’m hoping one of them will also take up an interest in daddy’s big camera and help lug my heavy case around! http://www.lorenzophotography.co.uk/

Congratulations to all involved for this really worthwhile initiative. Pleased to see the English wines features, but alas, I think, no vineyard yet in leafy Dulwich.
This looks like a great initiative, I wish I lived closer to the Dulwich Picture Gallery! For other online museum communities, see http://museums.wikia.com/ (wiki-based) and http://globalmuseum.ning.com/ .
I found this a very interesting blog. I am sure it is very useful for people living in Dulwich to keep up to date with cultural events there.
Good evening, just come across this little community and so I thought I’d introduce myself – your local ‘Pataphysician invites you to read his post: http://johnbrownlivesineastdulwich.blogspot.com/
