All over Dulwich, the Baroque the Streets street art initiative attracted loads of art lovers armed with cameras. The graffiti art in this project – both giant sized and tiny – is inspired by pictures in Dulwich Picture Gallery. This fun take on the Old Masters by cutting edge modern talent was conceived and brought to life by street art impresario, Ingrid Beazley (who is also a passionate advocate for the Gallery) with a team of talented street artists.

Here are two slideshows of some the fun:

In total Dulwich Picture Gallery received 74 beautiful entries in two age categoies: under 16 and 16+ (you can view them all on the Gallery’s Facebook page). The winning artworks were choosen by Dr. Xavier Bray, Chief Curator of Dulwich Picture Gallery and by the public on Facebook (artworks with the highest number of individual ‘likes’ won). Dulwich OnView interviewed the winners, first, meet Timothy Sutton who won the the Public’s Choice 16+ category.

Timothy, congratulations, your artwork was the most popular amongst Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Facebook followers . Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your winning artwork, ’Oscar’ a daft as a brush English Springer Spaniel?

My career as a portrait painter happened more by accident than on purpose. I went to Art College years ago but ended up working as a graphic designer specialising in corporate identity and web design. It wasn’t until we moved house fourteen years ago, and needed to decorate the walls, that I started creating paintings again. These started as large abstracts but, inspired by Damien Hirst’s hospital paintings, I was drawn to oil on canvas and portrait work in particular. My first commissioned painting of a dog was a Bedlington Terrier; I must admit that after the first day’s work I thought it was going to be a disaster, but with fresh eyes the next morning I realised I was beginning to develop a technique, something I have been refining ever since.

I think one of my fascinations with portrait work is the point when the painting turns from an inanimate flat surface into a living thing looking back at you. This especially happens when I have finished the eyes. This is one of the reasons I am particularly pleased with the painting of Oscar. English Springers are slightly mad creatures with only two modes of operation, rushing around or waiting to rush around. The expression in Oscar’s eyes are “OK, I’m waiting to rush around. When can I rush around? Can I rush around now please?”

Can you describe the medium and technique you are using?

The fascinating and frustrating thing with oil paint is that it is bit of a beast. Unlike acrylics, they do not dry straight away which can be extremely annoying at first. However, after time you discover that this is the beauty of the medium and something that can be used to the painter’s advantage. It is the unpredictability of the medium which makes it so interesting and keeps me learning new thing every day.

For the pets I tend to paint on canvas and for small portraits of people I like to work on board (not sure why but it just seems to suit my style). Larger portraits I always paint on canvas which I make up and stretch myself. Portraits are taken from sittings or photographs, and often a combination of both. The client is always shown the underpainting stage, so we both know how the work will progress, and then I move on to the final painting. For pets I work very much wet on wet, and for people I will use glazing medium for the final layers. Even though I have read quite a few books and studied the old masters, much of my technique I have developed myself. With oils there is no right or wrong way, you just have to work it out for yourself.

“I think one of my fascinations with portrait work is the point when the painting turns from an inanimate flat surface into a living thing looking back at you”

Where did you hear about the competition and have you ever visited Dulwich Picture Gallery?

I live in Brixton so, as a portrait painter, having Dulwich Picture Gallery practically on my door step is fantastic. I have been a friend of the Gallery for a number of years and try to get to as many of the shows and Private Views as I can. In the past my work has also been accepted into the bi-annual Friend’s Exhibition, which I think is a great event and only wish it could happen every year. A lot of hard work by the organisers I’m sure, but a great way of involving the Gallery with the local artist community. I heard about the Man’s Best Friend competition from the web site.

Have you got any exhibitions/shows coming up?

I will be showing my work next at Urban Art 2013 on 13 and 14 July in Josephine Avenue, London SW2. This is an event I started back in 2002 and it has now grown into London’s largest al fresco art fair with over 170 exhibitors showing a whole range of work including painting, print making, street art and photography. As well being a great community event and raising money for charities, Urban Art aims are to provide affordable and credible exhibition space for new and established artists. Also, for the visitors it is an opportunity to meet artists face to face and find out more about the creative processes they use. Very exciting for this year we are creating a new Street Art area and spraying a life size London Tube train! We are nearly there with the funding on this, but still need some help. For more information on our Crowd Funding appeal go to www.urbanart.co.uk.

Here plot holders can pause, resting on a spade, to see iconic buildings and the ever changing city skyline. Hand built, individually decorated sheds contrast with the cutting edge modern architecture. Quirky bird scarers, brilliantly coloured annual flowers and companion plants and a multitude of plant supports, recycled containers and compost heaps embellish the plots.

Visitors are invited to explore the site, unearth the history of allotments, view everyday and unusual crops, encounter delightful, idiosyncratic constructions and see the variety of cultivation techniques, practised by the diverse membership, of all ages and many ethnic groups. There will be an educational scavenger hunt for children, interpretational signage, teas, cakes, postcards and plants for sale. Discover the ingenuity, creativity and productivity of our plot holders by visiting our site!

Alongside the open days will be a series of free talks from 7.30 in the evening. A range of speakers will discuss food growing and sustainability. Subjects include the Lost Effra, Medical Herbalism, Wheat and it’s important to civilisation, Plant Lore, Bee Keeping and Local Sustainable Food. Although admission is free, booking will be necessary as numbers are limited. Participants are invited to enjoy the birdsong, early summer blooms, fragrant evening air and delicious, seasonal food, some grown literally yards away. There will be a complimentary cocktail while surveying the allotments, a choice of starter, main course and dessert, with amuse bouche to wet the appetite and herbal tea to finish, all in a green and pleasant setting.
The talk was by Helen Saberi, author of Tea: A Global History. As an avid tea lover, it really came as no surprise to learn that tea is the second most popular beverage in the world. In fact, we Brits drink more tea than any nation on earth, with 66% of the British population drinking tea every day.

Helen’s talk was about the tea journey along the Silk Road from Xian in China to Istanbul in Turkey passing through such places as Tibet, Central Asia, Kashmir, Afghanistan and Iran. Helen discussed the various ways this versatile beverage is prepared and drunk along the way, including the butter tea of Tibet and pink tea of Kashmir and Afghanistan. She also described some of the tea drinking customs and traditions in countries such as Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Tibet. Helen showed us some lovely images of tea drinking and tea equipage including many interesting and rare ones from the Horniman Museum and Gardens collections.

Tea cups and equipment from museum collection.

The history of tea is an interesting one. Legend has it that tea was discovered by the Chinese Emperor, Shan Nong, in 2737 B.C. The Emperor had a habit of boiling his drinking water. One day while he was in his garden a few tea leaves fell by chance into his boiling water which then gave off a rich, alluring aroma. The Emperor, upon drinking this brew, discovered it to be refreshing and energizing. He immediately gave the command that tea bushes to be planted in the gardens of his palace. Thus the custom of brewing fresh tea leaves in hot water began and it quickly spread.

Since the discovery of tea, the tradition of drinking tea brewed from fresh tea leaves in boiling water established well in China. Until the fifth century A.D., tea was primarily used as a remedy, due to the medicinal benefits attributed to it. From this time onwards, China’s upper class adopted the fashion of presenting packages of tea as highly esteemed gifts and drinking tea at social events and in private homes.

Arabian Camel Caravan

The increasing importance of tea in daily life led to high demand and tea was being promoted to countries outside of Southern China. The Chinese were the main exporters of tea. The Silk Road was a trade link from Yunnan, one of the first tea-producing regions, to countries in Asia and the Middle East. The tea loads were carried on horses or camel caravans.

Tea brick

Back then, tea was compressed into tea bricks, they were usually made with thoroughly dried and ground tea leaves that were pressed into various bricks or other shapes, although partially dried and whole leaves were also used. Some tea bricks were also mixed with binding agents such as flour, blood, or manure to better preserve their form so they could withstand physical use as currency. No-one still knows why blood was used as a binding agent and where the blood came from. It remains a mystery to this day.

Drinking tea became popular over the centuries. People would gather at tea houses to chat, socialise, and enjoy tea – tea houses often served as centres of social interaction. In countries such as Afghanistan, they have chaikhonas (tea house) – people will visit chaikhonas to drink tea and listen to native music or storytelling. In Baltistan there is a saying about 3 cups of tea, if you want to thrive in Baltistan, you must respect their ways. The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you share a cuppa, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for family, Balti’s prepared to do anything, even die.

Helen concluded the talk by sharing the story of Frederick Horniman (founder of Horniman Museum), Frederick was the son of John Horniman, who established Horniman’s Tea, a tea business using mechanical packaging. By 1891, it was said to be the biggest tea company in the world. The business was sold in 1918 to J. Lyons & Co., who moved production to their new factory in Middlesex, in July 1921, even though worldwide distribution ended in 1993, Horniman’s Tea remains a popular brand of tea and infusions in Spain – so do keep an eye out next time you visit Spain.

Sugared almond and green tea

After the talk, everyone had the chance to taste two types of delicious English green tea from the Tregothnan Estate in Cornwall and eat some yummy sugared almonds. We were invited to bring our own mugs and teacups, so the tea drinking experience felt more personal and comforting.

Tea tasting and the sunset at Horniman Gardens.

Tea has a long and important history of bringing people together. It was fascinating to learn about the history of tea and tea customs in different cultures. Everyone at the Horniman enjoyed chatting away over a hot cup of tea and watching the sunset in the Gardens.

Do you have a tea story to share? You can leave your comments below…

Dulwich OnView held a tea party in 2010, it was a huge success and the tea helped us to mingle with the locals, enjoying time relaxing with the warmth of tea and friendship.

As part of the Dulwich Festival this year Baroque the Streets (organised in collaboration with Street Art London) is working with a cherry picked group of internationally renowned street artists. Each artist has been commissioned to paint one of several carefully selected walls in the area. In an ingenious twist each artist will work in their own distinctive style but will take inspiration from paintings in Dulwich Picture Gallery’s world famous collection of Old Master paintings.
The festival includes graffiti master classes, a launch party, a tour of the completed walls and installations in a local house on Lordship Lane.

Dulwich OnView talked to German based graffiti artist MadC who told us a bit more about what she has been doing:
- I have painted a wall that is inspired by a painting on display at Dulwich Picture Gallery, “Still Life with Flowers” by Van Huysum c.1720. I aim to fuse my art with an old Master’s piece as well as fit the images with the surroundings or architecture of the wall. I have also painted a complete room in the ArtHouse.

For those of our readers who might not have heard of you or your work, can you tell us a bit about your artistic background, current projects and influences?

- I started as a graffiti artist about 15 years ago. Before that I had already painted with watercolours, oil and even worked with sculpting and won a couple of young artists’ prizes.
Thanks to graffiti art I received invitations worldwide and travelled the globe to paint in many countries. Some of the places I have painted include Hawaii, Bolivia, Lebanon, South Africa, New York, Colombia, Mexico and many places in Europe. Next to that I studied Graphic Design in Germany, Prague and New York and have a Masters Degree. I also lived in London for a year and a half whilst working for a Postgraduate course in Character Animation. After that time I started painting canvases again.

It took me about 3 years to find a way to express the energy of my murals on a small scale. Now I feel very comfortable in painting both – large murals and canvases. My canvases are shown in various solo and group shows worldwide, including London, Paris and San Francisco. I have also published two books with Thames & Hudson on Street Art – Sticker City (2007) and Street Fonts (2011). I am influenced by my travels, nature, literature and movies. Currently I am working on my next solo show in Paris, I am planning some large scale murals and I am looking further into working in 3 dimensions.

Why did you decide to get involved in this project?

- I love to go new creative ways and to be inspired by other art forms. The idea to use an old painting as a source of inspiration is wonderful. Also the walls that were chosen are very interesting to paint. I lived in Herne Hill and East Dulwich while studying at Central Saint Martins and I particularly love to make the image work within its surrounding. So I was more than happy to follow this invitation.

Will this project contribute to your existing work or is it completely different from anything else you’ve ever done? If so how does it compare?

- It will definitely contribute to my work. It is pretty different from what I have done before. Sometimes I collaborate with other artists, then both of us work on the wall at the same time. For this project I basically collaborate with another artist also, just that this one has gone a long time ago. So I have to try to catch the essence of his work, as well as mine.

What do you think is the major barrier (if any) facing female street artists?

- The main barrier is in the women’s heads. They see themselves as different and often even try to separate themselves from the male street artists rather than dealing with the criticism you always have to face in the beginning. Of course it can be tough sometimes, but women amongst each other also criticise and bully. I don’t think gender matters in the long run. Especially in art, people usually see your work first and the artist after. So you get judged by your skills, not by your gender. If you put your art first and yourself as a person second, the barriers aren’t there.

Baroque the Streets is a long-sighted project with the aim to turn Dulwich into an outdoor museum. Where do you see the future of Street Art?

- I am sure that Street Art will be completely accepted as an art form in the future. Not just in the UK, but worldwide. Of course street art works best in the streets, so an outdoor museum is the perfect approach.

Well it’s all part of an event called “they are coming” which you may already know loads about but if not here’s a bit of background. The event is part of London Life, a series of art events celebrating the heritage and people of south Southwark.

Sometime Soon Arts have been working with eight groups (mainly young children) across south Southwark to create 40 scarecrows. These scarecrows celebrate and remember the heritage of the area and reflects the south Southwark of today. For example Enid Byltons connection with Lordship Lane will be brought to life with contemporary famous five scarecrows and a group of gypsies will be made to represent the charcoal making that happened along Croxted Road.

Over the past week these scarecrows have been mysteriously appearing around the Dulwich area and have caused a stir on twitter and on local online communities. The overall campaign is unbranded, so no one had no idea about who is behind it all. Everyone was eager to know what exactly was going on!

The big reveal took place on Friday evening when all the scarecrows gathered in Dulwich Library. Local residents were able to view the scarecrow collection in their entirety and discover, via mp3 players, that each scarecrow has a story to tell – stories from the individuals who have made them. The installation will be there until 19 May 2013.

The quotes below and image is from the opening of the “They are Coming” event:

Graham Shackell, director of Sometime Soon Arts said: This has been a fantastic project, and I would like to thank everyone who came on the journey with me. With approximately 400 people taking part directly, it was a wonderful community event.”

Rueben Shelby

Quotes from children at St Johns and St Clements -

Fin: “It made me happy and proud that were part of a project that involved 400 people.”

Reuben: “We made scarecrows one was a dog walker, one was Enid Blyton a dog walker and a yummy mummy. We learned we could make them out of any old junk.”

For the seventh year running now, they’ve come up with another 5 beautiful private gardens for you to enjoy on Sunday 19 May, 2pm – 6pm in their Dulwich Garden Safari.

Last year, hundreds of people had a great time meandering through the gardens and soaking up the lovely sights, sounds and smells and Dulwich Helpline is hoping for an even bigger turnout this year!

This year’s gardens will be taking place in Camberwell. The circuit will take in four wonderful, and very different gardens before going through Lettsom Gardens. An additional excitement this year is that the original Camber Well, over 2,000 years old, will also be open as part of the circuit. A local historian will be present to answer questions.

Lettsom Gardens

The event costs just £5 for visiting all the gardens and there will be a tea and home-made cakes stop at 8 Grove Park. The Safari will begin at 189 Camberwell Grove, where there will also be a plant stall.

The event will raise money for the work of Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care, through their fantastic team of volunteers and a variety of interest and activity groups, provide friendship, emotional support, and practical help to isolated older people in the community of Dulwich and neighbouring areas in south Southwark.

Programmes and maps available on the day from 189 Camberwell Grove, London SE5 8JU.
Adults £5 (children under 16 – FREE) Sorry, no dogs please.
Unfortunately a number of the gardens involve steps so are not suitable for wheelchairs.

So come “on safari”, enjoy some stunning local gardens and support this worthy local charity!

You can watch this enchanting animated film at the park’s Performance Space, with the view across London providing a stunning backdrop.

So what’s the film about? Ten-year-old Chihiro and her parents stumble into a fantastical realm of witches and monsters. We follow her adventures as she struggles to return her family to the human world – but a simple plot synopsis cannot do justice to this film of mesmerizing beauty. With accolades that include the 2002 Oscar for the best animated feature, Spirited Away (Dir Hayao Miyazaki, 2001, Japan, Cert PG, 120mins) is frequently cited among the greatest animated features of all time.

This will be the first full-length outdoor screening of a film in the history of Brockwell Park and it will be ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Herne Hill Free Film Festival 2013 programme.

There will be stalls selling mouth-watering selection of hot food and the park café will be open for drinks and light refreshments.

Please note: this event will be taking place in an unlit park and you are asked to bring torches. This is an outdoor screening without seats so please bring your own chairs, rugs or cushions. And everyone’s advised to dress for the British Summer weather! Even if it’s a lovely day, it might be chilly after dark.

Entrance to the park for this event is through the Herne Hill gates at the junction of Norwood Road and Dulwich Road.

FREE screening. No advance booking.

The event is free to attend but donations to help fund future events are very welcome. Look out for collection buckets at screenings. The event is expected to be very, so please arrive in good time, because if the Performance Area fills you might have a restricted view. The festival team will reserve the right not to admit more people once capacity is reached.

*Please note: The venue for the screening has been moved from the Performance Space by the cafe to in front of the walled garden and white temple. This is because the newly laid grass in the Performance Space is not ready for the footfall yet.

2012 saw the Southwark Youth Orchestra and the David Idowu Choir collaborate with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the esteemed conductor and composer Charles Hazlewood to put on a unique concert at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the South Bank’s as part of the ‘Imagine’ Children’s Festival. The Southwark Youth Orchestra also worked with the South Bank Sinfonia in a side-by-side rehearsal and performance, again at the Festival Hall, a fantastic opportunity for the players to work and perform alongside young professional musicians.

The David Idowu Choir took part in the Music For Youth Regional Festival, on the back of which they were invited to perform at the National Festival in Birmingham last summer, where they were awarded the Martyn Donaldson Music Trust Senior Choir award. 2012 also saw the launch of the innovative Animate Orchestra, partnership project between the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Trinity Laban and Southwark and Lambeth Music Services.

2013 has already seen an Animate Orchestra performance at the Blackheath Halls and the David Idowu Choir scoop yet another award, this time the Music Teacher Magazine Editor’s Award at their inaugural ceremony held at the Barbican before Easter. This fantastic accolade is testimony to the hard work, skill and vision shown by the team involved, and most importantly it is just reward to the young Southwark singers who make the choir the success it is through their talent, commitment and belief in one another.

There are plenty of opportunities for Southwark musicians not yet involved in these exciting ensembles to take part. All ensembles are open to young people who either live or go to school in Southwark.

The David Idowu Choir was set up by SMS in partnership with the David Idowu Foundation and Excellence in Southawark. The choir was founded in memory of David Olawale Idowu who tragically lost his life to knife crime in 2008. David was stabbed in the park in front of his home and died twenty days later. Even more tragically, it was later discovered that David was targeted purely because he attended a different school to his attacker. Inspired by the way in which the Southwark Youth Orchestra brings together young people from different schools across the borough, David’s mother Grace (founder of the David Idowu foundation) approached SMS to ask if we would work with her to set up a choir using a similar model. The choir is for Southwark singers in Year 9 and above. They meet during half term holidays for intensive two day courses, and for special performances throughout the year. Choir courses are free of charge to attend.

Ben

The Southwark Youth Orchestra is brings together the most talented orchestral musicians from across the borough. There is no minimum age to join the orchestra, but players must have reached at least a Grade 5 equivalent standard. SYO is conducted by the extraordinarily talented young and upcoming conductor, Ben Gernon. Ben is the Conducting Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is mentored by Sian Edwards, Charles Peebles, Martyn Brabbins and the now sadly late Sir Colin Davis. Ben made his BBC Proms debut conducting Tansy Davies’ Composer’s Portrait Concert for BBC Radio 3, and was a finalist in the Donatella Flick LSO conducting competition last year – an absolutely tremendous achievement. Ben is currently one of three finalists in the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award.

Like the choir, the orchestra meet during half term holidays for intensive rehearsals, and for special performances throughout the year. There is a nominal course fee of £25 per player to attend each course, with concessions for siblings and for players in receipt of free school meals.

Both the choir and the orchestra will be meeting this half term, each for a two day course. SYO will also be giving a formal concert at the end of their course which members of the community are strongly encouraged to attend. The concert will take place at St John the Evangelist Church in Goose Green, East Dulwich. In the Autumn term the orchestra and the choir will once again be collaborating to put on a premier performance of a brand new composition that has been commissioned especially for these two ensembles via Making Music’s ‘Adopt a Composer’ scheme. This is a hugely exciting opportunity as the concert will be recorded and broadcasted on BBC Radio 3. Full details of this performance will follow, again members of the local community are warmly invited to attend!

So if you live or go to school in Southwark, and if you are a singer in Year 9 or above, or if you play an instrument to a minimum Grade 5 standard (of any age), please do join us so that you can be involved and represent your borough on the BBC broadcast!

Old Library, Dulwich College

13 years might seem a long time to make an around the world trip but when you’re using only human-powered means of transport, it’s pretty good going. Jason Lewis’s epic 46,505-mile journey took him across five continents, two oceans, and one sea, using only the power of his body. Walking, cycling, and rollerblading the landmasses, and kayaking, rowing, swimming and pedalling a boat across the oceans – with no assistance from motors or the wind – Lewis set four world records, and clinched what the Sunday Times hailed as “the last great first for circumnavigation.” Hear his gripping story at The Old Library, Dulwich College and prepare to rethink your holiday options.

Over a sunny lunch break I was treated to a tour around the Dulwich hotspots where work is in progress on the walls.

We swung by the Paxton to be greeted with an almost complete giant mural on one side of its brick façade. Leaning precariously out of a genie was REKA putting the final touches to his design which is inspired by Europa and the Bull by Guido Reni.

Taking over much of that side of the Paxton pub this work is striking, but surprisingly unobtrusive. REKA explained that he used a limited palette and took account of the existing colour scheme of the pub in his design. The huge head and torso of a woman he has painted is made up of a muted collection of black, grey, blue and mustard yellow, with bright streaks of red, turquoise and blue which give it shape and energy. He also explained the difficulties of painting the wall involved negotiating a large drainpipe and his solution was to paint the figure close up and far over to the left but have her hair flowing out to the right, curling around and beyond the drain pipe.

Driving through a busy East Dulwich we then caught a glimpse of Conor Harrington making the final touches to another huge mural. His giant duelling figures in period costume loom majestically up out of nowhere off the corner of the Goose Green roundabout. Hidden just around the bend they are at odds with the residential surroundings; huge figures towering over pedestrians heading for the local shops.

The rate at which these works have appeared, transforming Dulwich in the process, is perhaps not surprising considering the illegal nature of much of Street Art, although permission has been granted for all the Dulwich murals. What is astonishing is the quality of what these artists can achieve at break neck speed.

That night I met some more of them at 265 Lordship Lane which has become an informal base camp for the project. Over a couple of beers the guys chatted about their involvement and the work that is being produced. I even got to see some work in action as REKA was painting the side of their van in the yard and ROA was there creating an incredible skeletal image on an exposed brick wall above the kitchen at the back of the house. From an image he was using it looked like it was cat skeleton.

Christiaan Nagle explained to me as they painted, that many of these artists have been at it since they were as young as 13 and they have got used to working fast and accurately. He described how, through years of practise, they’ve developed ‘can control’ which is essential, as shading is achieved through the varying pressure an artist places on the cap and he said ‘ that’s what makes a piece pop, you can’t get that same effect with a paint brush’. I am beginning to see how delicate and precise an art form spray painting is and with so little room for mistakes it’s incredible that many of these guys, who paint prolifically all over the world, don’t work from sketches or mark out their work before they start.

Christiaan also showed me his own work in the house, a room on the upper floor. He’s working on an installation using polyurethane foam, which he has sprayed in an erratic pattern all over the walls, flecked with bright pastel shades of paint and illuminated by strip lights on the floor. If I lived in the Street Art House I’d bag this as my bedroom, it’s tactile, bizarre and strangely comforting.

Christiaan is most famous for the mushrooms he makes in the same material and fixes onto buildings. Although not exclusively a Street Artist he says there is a buzz about it that you can’t get elsewhere, the illegality of it is integral to its appeal for many artists, it’s all about taking the risk to paint anywhere you want. ‘For murals’ he says, ‘size is everything because you need to leave an impact. But for my work it’s about the location and about the surprise somebody gets waking up and seeing that the property has sprouted a mushroom overnight’.

The house is a hive of activity and a time lapse camera is capturing the whole process. The transformation in just a few days since I last saw it is amazing, with new rooms being completed every day. Thierry Noir is working on the dining room with a wall covered in his signature flat silhouettes of heads in profile with huge red lips, whilst outside Citizen Kane is creating a set of concrete reliefs, cast using hand sculpted rubber moulds, that will be suspended on the back of the property. He explained to me that he’s using this project to experiment, working with new materials and colours. The creatures he makes have huge eyes and many legs, inspired by sci-fi and his past experiences of ecstasy-fuelled visions.

The atmosphere in the house is relaxed but productive, with so many artists involved, the word’s spreading fast; it’s a melting pot of styles, ideas, experiments and materials. REKA summed up his experience of the project succinctly saying ‘it’s a chance to connect with such a great group of people and an amazing opportunity to be inspired by the DPG paintings’.

Excited? Find out where the artists will be painting using this map of all the wall locations.

If you ever visit Hilly Fields park in Brockley during the summer, you may come across two women perched on a ladder picking crab apples or plums. What started as a pastime two years ago to use up the glut of fruit has become an exciting local business making preserves called Wild Brockley.

“It seemed like the ideal solution to use up fruit which would otherwise go to waste, and fruit in parks and gardens tend not to be sprayed with chemicals,” says co-founder Elisabetta Fumagalli. “And by cooking fruit the same day as its picked, ensures the flavour is preserved at its best.”

Wild Brockley has expanded in the last year to make a range of jams, chutneys and jellies all cooked in small batches with nearly half the amount of sugar than most shop bought jams. This emphasis on flavour, quality and sustainability is Wild Brockley’s hallmark and an aim they continually work to maintain. “We are always on the lookout for crops of the less common fruit such as mulberry and greengage,” says Moira Tait, Wild Brockley’s other half. “These are our most popular flavours from our jam range and if you let us pick fruit from your garden, we’ll give you a jar in return.”

Wild Brockley stall at the Ladywell Market

Their latest venture is a range of unusual flavour combination such as Plum and Chocolate Chutney and Blackberry and Coffee Jam. “We are really excited about these new preserves and if people like them we will make more this summer,” says Elisabetta. If you’d like to sample the new range Wild Brockley are holding a Tasting Day at Pistachios in the Park café on Hilly Fields, on Saturday 11 May from 11.00 to 3pm. “We really want feedback from people and it seemed wholly appropriate to hold the event here where you’ll probably walk under one of the trees we’ve picked from!”

Visitors will also be able to taste and buy from their more traditional range, but if you cannot make the tasting day they deliver locally and sell at local delis: The Allotment in New Cross and The Hill Trader on Telegraph Hill.

This is Stevie’s first novel, partly set in a fictional road in Dulwich. He is terribly excited that it’s published on the 1st May by Matador Books.

He said about the book, ‘From the moment that you see the intriguing title and the amazing cover artwork by Marnie Pitts you know that this book is going to be a mystery and a fantasy. I think that in current straightened economic times peoples are looking to escape from the grind of the everyday, and ‘The Lost Boy’ is a great fantasy book to lose themselves in, like an adult fairy tale.’

When asked what the book is about, Stevie replied somewhat enigmatically.‘The book will be lots of different things to different people! It’s a mind twisting time travelling tale, it’s a beautiful gay love story, it’s a murder mystery and it’s the spiritual journey of four people: a young man growing up in South London in the 1950’s and struggling with his sexuality, a psychic woman who has a vision during the Blitz whilst using the Tarot, a lonely wounded and repressed Battle of Britain pilot and last but not least a serial killer.

But further than that there are a number of important spiritual and metaphysical themes going on. I’m not going to mention all of them as it would give the story away, but the concept of karmic returns is considered, as are big questions about how much of our life is pre-destined and how much can be changed by human intervention.

It’s also a very emotional, bitter-sweet book, and my readers have commented on how it allows them to feel powerful emotions and most importantly to shed some tears.’

When asked what his inspirations were for ‘The Lost Boy’ Stevie said,
‘I could list so many but to name a couple: many of the colourful characters have a reference to people that I have met in real life, and although the book is not auto biographical some of the narrative has echoes of my own. I’m a life long Doctor Who geek and this wonderful show has inspired my interest in the potential and implications of time travel. It’s fair to say though, that in Doctor Who there are a lot of green slimy monsters but in ‘The Lost Boy’ the only monsters are human.’

If you are intrigued then you can buy the paperback from most internet bookstores, although Stevie recommends his good friends at Wildsounds which is a small independent bookseller.

If you are a Kindle person you can download from Amazon
You can follow ‘The Lost Boy’on Facebook
A world-famous Gallery, acres of historical estate land, serene leafy residential streets, and the bustling delights of Lordship Lane. Before 2013, however, one place it most certainly wasn’t was a centre for internationally renowned Street Art.

A ground breaking new project, Baroque the Streets, is about to change the face of Dulwich forever! Masterminded by Ingrid Beazley and organised in collaboration with Street Art London this festival will play host to a cherry picked group of artists from all over the world, who are, or have at one time been, working predominantly on the Streets. They will individually work on specially commissioned walls all over the area, each inspired by a different painting or artist represented in Dulwich Picture Gallery’s collection. These artists will create work that will, it is hoped, form the basis of a new outdoor museum.

This is a fascinating idea for the Dulwich community to embrace. The project brings together a fashionable contemporary art movement with some of the most famous paintings in the canon of western art. Street Art is usually so ephemeral but these commissions are intended from the outset to be long-lasting, a diverse programme of work that will showcase a cross-section of the best international Street Art within the very specific context of Dulwich.

Amongst the artists involved are Irish Conor Harrington, who has found commercial success by combining a fine art finish with street art techniques and Sheffield’s Phlegm, who’s enigmatic, distinctive pen and ink style designs are inspired by his interest in comic books and illustration. Also included are German graffiti writer MadC , Thierry Noir , who is claimed to be the first Graffiti artist to paint the Berlin Wall and Belgian ROA who is most famous for the incredible giant rodents that, in London, can be found lurking in the darker corners of Shoreditch and Hackney.

Find out more about this eclectic bunch of artists from the experts on the Street Art London blog or check out Global Street Art an enormous online photo archive of Street Art from all over the world!

Excited? Find out where the artists will be painting using this map of all the wall locations.

Or why not sign up to one of the Baroque the Streets events?

But that’s not all. In another innovative twist Baroque the Streets has teamed up with local company Lightbox who have generously put off the demolition of a local property they own (265 Lordship Lane) so that the Street Artists can turn it into a giant collaborative installation for the duration of the festival.

We visited the work in progress and it was intriguing to see that the installation is developing organically, the unique character of each space based on the dynamic, experimental input of the various artists. The front bedroom, created by Crew, The Rolling People, looks like a paint bomb has exploded on the walls leaving you in an alternative blue and grey monochrome universe.

Next door South African Christiaan Nagel, who works in polyurethane ‘surfboard’ foam and is most famous for peppering the buildings of the East End with colourful giant mushrooms, has gone to town on the walls with an insanely random design in psychedelic pastels that are achingly tactile.

The other upstairs front room has been decked out, by Italian artist Run , with a repetitious design of red and yellow shapes overset with delicate, black outlines of human figures. This work is currently the most complete and is particularly intriguing because of its similarity to more conventional types of interior wall paper.

The rest of the house is yet to be fully worked on but if the giant rubber moulds made to look like jewelled insects in the downstairs living room are anything to go by we aren’t going to be disappointed.
Mexican Palbo Delgado has also got some great plans to ‘intervene’ in the bathroom with his miniature paste-ups that will be viewed through the locked door. A lot of decisions are still to be made but it might also be that one room is left free for visitors to paint with spray cans themselves!
As if that wasn’t enough the final flourish is that one of the larger downstairs spaces will be transformed in to a mock Dulwich Picture Gallery enfilade, painted Picture Gallery Red, and hung with canvases created by more of the artists involved.

The walls will be painted in the first half of May and the Street Art Festival will run from 10-19 May.

The ArtHouse will be opened with a launch party on 17th May at 8pm and there will also be a cinema room playing films about Street Art at the back of the house. 265 Lordship Lane will then be open for the whole weekend until 19th May, 11am-6pm in conjunction with Artists’ Open House.

But how do you make an impact in a bustling place like Dulwich when you’re working not on large scale, 2 foot high graffiti walls, but tiny curb side paste ups?*
We recently met Mexican born Pablo Delgado who told up more about his unusual take on the Street Artist’s oeuvre.

Your work is distinct because of its small size in comparison with much of the other pieces in this festival. Can you tell us more about what you do?
I don’t consider myself solely a Street Artist but I do work on the street and I’m very inspired by it as a movement. I use images found on the internet. I print them out and past them on walls, normally curbs or near to the ground. I want to change the meaning of the images I find, they are public images and I like to play with them, taking them out of their original context. My work is quite monochrome, when I started the only colour I used was red and I often create two characters from these images that conflict with each other in some way.

So why did you decide to get involved in this particular Street Art project?
I like it because it’s different and it’s a tribute to Street Art. I’m excited by the fact that it is intended to last a long time as Street Art is usually so ephemeral. Its connection to Dulwich Picture Gallery means that there is a specific context for what is being produced. I’m looking forward to having fun in the sun in beautiful Dulwich!

Can you tell us about your involvement in Baroque the Streets?
I’m creating miniature paste ups in and around the Dulwich area, on the route that some of the other artists are going to be painting large walls. I’ve been inspired by Poussin’s Triumph of David because of his tight geometrical detail which I see parallels with in my own tiny, precise work. I’m currently moving towards abstraction in my work as I think it’s a way to create fantasy. I’m excited about exploring this in my work for this project.
I’ll be making work for the Street ArtHouse on 265 Lordship where I’ll be doing an intervention in the bathroom. You’ll be able to see through the room but you won’t be able to go in!

In your opinion does size matter when it comes to Street Art?
I feel that the tiny size of my work is integral to its meaning. In an increasingly overcrowded world my work reflects each individual’s need for their own space. My work is discreet, you have to look for it!

What do you most love about Street Art?
It’s a powerful contemporary art movement. I love its accessibility both for artists and viewers. It’s directly there in front of you, not hidden in an art gallery. I wouldn’t want to get stuck in Street Art forever, but I love that it’s fresh and that there are no filters between artist and viewer, so you can completely reinvent yourself. There are pros and cons to it, there is a lot of rubbish out there and a lot of noise but it also offers so much freedom.

*Paste up – Street Art term that means artwork that is created at home and then pasted up like a poster in the street.

Being an artist is a service and I feel I must share my gift with others. I have my own art studio in the Tulse Hill area and am very lucky to live in South London as it is full of amazing creative people and there are lots of great events to be part of like the Dulwich Festival. It is important to keep links with the local community and artists as it’s a platform for discussing ideas and getting feedback about my work. I also think artists help to bring a certain quirkiness and individualism to an area, which is another reason why I support these local events.

On my new body of work you will see me combining my two favourite subjects, people and nature, to create visually unique and stunning new art pieces.

My initial inspiration was drawn from pictures of young girls residing in slum dwellings, past and present, which I found in a book during a visit to Chiswick House. The image of a little girl dressed in rags, yet beholding a beautiful smile with such gentleness in her eyes, encouraged me to consider more closely notions of the human condition, in particular, what creates happiness and what is one’s purpose in life?

The one based in Kingswood House, Paxton Green Time Bank, is a great example: about 300 members offer over 100 different skills, from Arabic and chess lessons to weight loss and woodworking, via de-cluttering, dog-walking and gardening.

Anyone can join and any hour given in help is banked and can be spent on any offer. We are building local awareness – and funds! – so do support us by coming to our first ever Open Garden on Sunday May 12th at 15a Sydenham Hill, from 2 – 5pm.

It’s a lovely garden with many interesting plants and a wooded area full of shade-loving and spring plants. The views over London are superb. Entrance is only £3 (under 12s free) and tea and cakes will be for sale, all to the benefit of the Time Bank.

The biggest names in international street art are creating murals in Dulwich during May in association with the Dulwich Festival

 This month the streets of Dulwich will be transformed as renowned street artists from around the world create an outdoor gallery of public murals.

 All of the street works will be based upon Baroque era Old Master paintings from Dulwich Picture Gallery’s permanent collection.

 Many will be painting live on the first weekend of Artists’ Open House between 10-12 May.

Street art is one of the most vital new global movements in the world of art. This project explores the place of street art in the continuum of art history as the current masters of the streets reinterpret and remix the works of the masters of old.

The international group of artists have also taken over a house in Dulwich, 265 Lordship Lane, for six weeks before it is demolished, thanks to the generosity of Lightbox London. The whole outside of the house will be painted and the artists will create installation works throughout the interior.

The house will be opened to the public for one weekend over 18-19 May, 11am – 6pm.
Launch party Friday 17 May, 8-10pm. (Private view and press 6-8pm by invitation only)
