You have probably seen all that street art popping up in the Dulwich area in the last couple of years. And you have probably gathered that they are pretty much all based on paintings in the permanent collection of Dulwich Picture Gallery. A large, lavishly illustrated book has been written about this strange project: ‘Street Art Fine Art’. Now 15 of the participating street artists have painted many of the covers of this hardback, and these illuminated books are on show at C&C Gallery in Forest Hill. ‘Street Art Book Art’ is on until 19 July.
These beautiful books are suspended from the gallery ceiling in specially designed acrylic holders, so you can see the backs and spines.
Street artists generally do their own thing. They find walls of differing sizes, the bigger the better, paint them in their own distinctive style, and leave. Some paint canvases and found objects to sell and make a living. But to have 15 of the world’s top street artists paint the same small thing, and be shown together, is unheard of.
These unique objects are not for sale, but ‘Street Art Fine Art’ can be purchased at C & C Gallery both in its original hardback (discounted for the show - £40) and its updated (10 more walls)paperback version (£20). Another book, documenting all these covers, has been produced, ‘Street Art Book Art’ - (£10). This has been printed with 15 different covers, one of each artist, and each has a limited edition of 100.
And one more thing - C&C Gallery is behind a great cafe called Canvas and Cream, 18 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3HF. So you could have a coffee/meal and take a look at the show. You can park in the Sainsburys car park around the back or take buses 176, 197, 185, 356.
