London has over 120 screens and cinemas, but most of these show only mainstream, Hollywood blockbuster, rom-com type films. South Social Film Festival offers something different.
Showing wholly independent film from all over the world, and integrating live music and cuisine from the film’s country of origin, this is an event that has never before been seen in South London.
South Social focuses its lens on celebrating South London and its great venues. The free fundraiser will take place in the unique Copeland Park, Peckham; an eclectic setting to match an individual festival. The fundraiser will showcase a selection of short films from around the globe, highlighting various social issues through the diverse and electrifying medium of film, as well as presenting some directorial firsts.
From ‘Caribbean Women, Caribbean Cameras’, a selection of colourful short films by female filmmakers from Barbados, Jamaica and Martinique, to ‘New Queer Visions: Points of View’, the critically acclaimed series of true to life and fictional shorts featuring hard hitting LGBT issues, South Social Film explores the vast world of independent film that travels the world and comes to a natural rest in South London.
Working directly with directors and distributors, and independent caterers and musicians for the screening entertainment, South Social Film Festival is as raw an independent cinema experience you can imagine. This November will see the first edition of the festival (dates/venues TBC); the first of many to come. We hope to raise as much awareness as possible of the festival, its ethos, and independent cinema in general. We invite everyone to come along, watch some breathtaking short films, have a drink, grab a bite, and meet the team.
