We are two local artists exhibiting at the Jane Newbery Gallery in Dulwich Village. Both of us are storytellers.
The Garden Party, Edori Fertig
We both studied Illustration and have a love of ambiguous narrative in our pictures. This is our second joint exhibition. In Narrative Spaces, we selected work that uses familiar scenes from our South London home studios in East Dulwich; open windows, gardens, and views from rooftops. The differences lie in the use of both subject and material.
My subject matter and use of media are found from many sources. I am from New York and have lived in East Dulwich for thirty years. I have always been fascinated with the things that you can find in markets. I have a particular fascination with Deptford market and have often come across family photographs. I see them as a part of urban anthropology. Why were these photos abandoned? Who are these people? Were they purposefully lost or was it an oversight? I find it very moving when you find a complete album and I feel the need to rescue it and make something creative with it so that I am honoring their memory. I often include

imagery found from other found sources, wallpapers and old observer books of wildlife. I redraw or transfer the photograph onto panel using a variety of materials and techniques including silverpoint and photographic transfer. The people and wildlife are then layered amongst garden foliage both real and imagined. The discarded is given a new purpose and illustrate both metaphorically and literally the notion of rebirth.
Greg’s work has recently become preoccupied with local and familiar settings that to some extent document his daily experiences of life in Dulwich and the surrounding area. These pictures are from one direct source and are primarily executed in acrylic. His snapshots of every day life leave the viewer with a sense of ambiguity as to what will occur next. In his night scenes, the windows of houses radiate with warm hues, alluding to a life beyond the picture. Each window creates a little universe, where life and therefore consciousness must exist.
The exhibition is until the 15th of March at Jane Newbery Gallery.
