“If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit next to me.”
The Dulwich Players are delighted to announce our next production, featuring an all-female cast performing the touching and comic Steel Magnolias.
Originally planned for 2020, but delayed due to Covid-19, the challenges in this play epitomise much of the last year and the struggles we have faced as a theatre group. The title refers to its characters, who exhibit the delicate characteristics of magnolias, but are often called upon to be as tough as steel.
Steel Magnolias charts a path though the life of Shelby Eaterton, from her wedding day to less happier events. It takes place within the walls of Truvy’s hair and beauty emporium in the American deep south – what better place to throw shade on everyone in the local community and further.
The play finds many ways to explore the topics of love and friendship: love that is full of hope and risks all; love that is lost; love rekindled; love on the wane; love that is blind and a mother’s love. All this is bound in the solid and enduring friendships between the group’s different characters: friendships that are frequently tested, almost to breaking point.
Then there are the killer lines… These will warm your soul better than chicken soup or have your rolling in the aisles – hopefully both.
Give yourself a treat.
